Short guide to French Guiana
As part of the French Republic, this small country offers a wide range of worldly cultures. Set on South America’s north coast, French Guiana is an experience of breathtaking sights and delectable flavours. Cayenne, the country’s capital, is a holiday destination that offers charm and picture-perfect moments. Kourou, also a prime tourist attraction, will delight the young and old with its space centre, the Center Spatial Guyanais.
In colonial times Guyana was referred to as British Guiana, Suriname as Dutch Guiana, whereas French Guiana has maintained its original name. Many still refer to the three as the Guianas.
Settled in the 1700s by the French, the area was then populated by indigenous Americans. These days, a Cayenne-based representative from France administers the country. Being a part of the European Union also means they use the Euro as their currency. Though eco-tourism is a thriving sector, timber, gold and fishing are considered the main industries of the region.
Guianese, Creole, Maroon, Amerindian and French make up the country’s multi-ethnic population of over 200,000. The coastal areas, being the most developed are also the most populated. Though the official language is French, many speak Creole. And while the majority follow the Roman Catholic faith, Maroons and Amerindians have remained faithful to their own beliefs.
