A Short Guide to Switzerland
SWITZERLAND has become synonymous with beautiful scenery, with gorgeous mountain ranges as the highlight.
But the country isn’t just a tax haven and playground for the rich. Many budget airlines now fly to the city of Geneva, which is also considered one of the healthiest places to live in the world.
Geneva is renowned for its colourful gardens and lakeside promenades and sits astride the River Rhône, which flows into Lake Geneva amid a spectacular backdrop of mountains. The Jet d'Eau shoots water 460ft into the sky at the south side of the lake from the end of a pier and is the city's main attraction and the most powerful fountain in Europe.
Geneva is Switzerland’s most cosmopolitan city and its reputation for religious and political tolerance dates back hundreds of years. In the 16th century the city gave birth to the religious teachings of John Calvin, and was also home to Lenin for one period of his life.
But in modern Switzerland stately homes now line the banks of Lake Geneva, which is also home to a fleet of luxury yachts. The exclusive boutiques are home to designer labels and limousines are a common sight among the grand avenues.
There is also a cultural feast in Switzerland, including Geneva’s celebration of L'Escalade in December, which involves torch-lit processions through the town.
Geneva, home to the UN and the Red Cross, is also a famous banking centre, a gateway to luxury ski resorts, and home to thousands of international diplomats.
