Short Guide to New Zealand

The land of New Zealand is a small but magnificent destination for lovers of breathtaking natural scenery and incredible views. This land has gained prominence in recent times by being the chosen location for the major Hollywood productions of 'The Lord of the Rings trilogy and the more recent 'King Kong'. Lovingly referred to as 'Kiwis', the local New Zealanders are very friendly and welcoming people.

Particularly popular amongst travellers seeking a bit of adventure, New Zealand remains one of the best locations for trekking, hiking and everything related to the great outdoors.

New Zealand consists of two separate islands, the North and the South. Each island has a uniquely distinct character and complements each other nicely. The north is more renowned for its beautiful beaches, traditional Maori traditions and water activities. The South, on the other hand, is less hectic than the North and you will feel a distinctly laid back and relaxed feel. Populated by majestic mountain landscapes, Icy glaciers and deep and dense rainforest, a feeling of serenity and peace is inevitably evoked.

New Zealand was founded in the year eighteen forty, was formed in an official document to settle the disputes between the European and indigenous Maori peoples. In more recent times the cultural identity of both sides has been painstakingly preserved and run side by side practically trouble-free. The national sport of rugby has a unifying effect in bringing both sides together, being particularly successful on the world scene, New Zealanders are extremely proud of their national team.

New Zealand is like an adventure capital for the world's adrenaline junkies. Having a variety of sports activities to partake in, from extreme bunjy jumping to awe-inspiring helicopter trips and from swimming with loveable dolphins to high-speed boat rides. Alternatively, for the more laid back amongst you, New Zealand has more than enough Museums, galleries and national parks to leisurely peruse and relax in. The most famous cities are Wellington and New Zealand in the North and the city of Christchurch in the South.

The official spoken languages in New Zealand are English and Maori. English, however, is the most widely utilised out of the two. New Zealand is a very safe destination to visit and there are no particular health risks associated with this destination. UK citizens have an agreement with the government that entitles them to free emergency healthcare whilst in the country. If going for adventure purposes, be sure that you have adequate insurance to cover any unfortunate incidents.
