Short guide to Sri Lanka
Lying just 30 kilometres off the southern tip of India is Sri Lanka – a beautiful paradise island at the very heart of the Buddhist religion. The country has become a mecca for exotic but affordable beach holidays with its endless miles of spectacular sandy beaches.
But it is also a hotbed of culture with seven World Heritage sites celebrating more than 3,000 years of history.
Tropical weather is a constant feature in Sri Lanka, which lies just three degrees north of the equator. The monsoon season is even punctuated by humid conditions and sunshine. But modern-day Sri Lanka has experienced a degree of political turmoil and even terrorism, particularly in the north and in the commercial capital Colombo.
Happily, the beaches and towns of the south have been mainly unaffected by the trouble, but travellers should still gauge the political situation before venturing forth.
Tourism on the island is also still trying to regain its composure following the devastating effects of the tsunami in 2004.
Sri Lanka and its population of 20 million people lie in the path of the major sea routes. Visitors can also marvel at the ancient sites of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Dambulla and Panduwasnuwara, where they can view what is left of a great civilisation.
