Short guide to South Korea
A fascinating fusion of modern cities, ancient ruins, natural wonders and breathtaking landscapes make South Korea an absolute must-see country.
The Korean republic’s history goes back 500,000 years, but since 1953 the country has been split from its North Korean neighbours by a military zone. While North Korea remains a secretive, totalitarian state in the grip of a despotic ruler, South Korea has flourished. It is a stable democracy with a population of 50 million, mainly settled in seven big cities.
The capital, Seoul, is the city most visited by tourists and is the 10th biggest city in the world. Shimmering skyscrapers dwarf ancient shrines in this city of wonderful contrasts. There are thousands of attractions, brilliant nightlife and wonderful culinary treats.
Previously dubbed the “Hermit Kingdom”, tourists are discovering with delight the hidden treasures of the southern half of the rugged Korean peninsula, which pokes southwards from the eastern end of the Asian continent.
The province of Gangwon-do on the east is the least populated area of the country, where remote mountainous valleys are dotted with tiny towns. This region hosted 1999’s Winter Games of Asia and is rapidly gaining a reputation as a mecca for a top skiing destination.
