A Short Guide to Slovenia
SLOVENIANS are proud that their country is the only one in the world with the word “love” in the name. And they have many good reasons to feel proud.
Sandwiched between Italy, Croatia, Hungary and Austria, Slovenia is a small country with a very big heart. There are a host of wonderful and unique attractions, including primeval forests, beautiful architecture, thermal springs and the spooky and mysterious Karst caves.
And then there is the sunshine – about 2,000 hours of it a year – which is why many tourists gravitate to the south west coastline and the glistening blue sea of the Adriatic.
Slovenia is a country of contrasts. As well as a dip in the Adriatic, travellers can go skiing on the alpine slopes, explore the subterranean wonders of the Karst, or feel the invigorating benefits of a thermal bath. They also have the option of ambling amble through scenic vine-clad hills or end the day in one of the swanky casinos.
The busy capital, Ljubljana, has a picturesque mix of Baroque, Renaissance and Art Nouveau architecture and provides an almost alpine atmosphere, which comes from being a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire for many centuries. These are some of the reasons why tourists cannot help but fall in “love” with Slovenia.
