Short guide to Indonesia
Indonesia is a unique country. It is the world’s largest archipelago with 17,000 islands dotted across the equator. There are five main islands, which are renowned for their diversity, from the poverty and industrial bustle of Java to the tranquil beauty of Bali.
The country has been bequeathed a kaleidoscope of cultures and has been enriched by historical kingdoms, conquests and colonialism, all of which provide a wonderful treat for travellers.
The ever-evolving landscapes, with their paddy fields and simmering volcanic environment, provide a dramatic backdrop, as does the volatility of the climate with a natural disaster seemingly never far away. Its location on the Pacific “Ring Of Fire” makes it more susceptible to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
Sadly, Indonesian society seems to be perennially challenged and blighted by racial conflicts, religious fighting, mini revolutions, government corruption and economic mismanagement. In a more sinister twist, terrorism has also blighted the country with the country left reeling from the 2002 and 2005 Bali bombings, which caused death and devastation.
But despite the turbulence and the terror, Indonesia has recovered and still offers an unprecedented diversity of cultures when it comes to art and other local Indonesian traditions. For this reason, thousands of travellers continue to flock to the country.
From the wilderness and fascinating wildlife of Sumatra, the sandy beaches of Bali and the mind-blowing historical monuments of Java, Indonesia really has got it all.
