A Short Guide to Greece
Greece is known for spawning many things including the Olympic games, democracy and the fundamentals for mathematics, philosophy and science. While ancient classical Greece gave much culture to the world, modern Greece is a place known for a vacation hot spot rather than a place to learn about the past and how different things came to be.
The country brings in many visitors every year by offering the simple pleasures of life including great tasting food that are within budgets, local wines, an almost never-ending coastline with gorgeous beaches, picturesque villages and the tiny islands that dot the country, a surprise in themselves.
Visitors can feel and see the charm the country of Greece has to offer including the islands that people tend to visit. The islands have held onto their traditional buildings and way of life even though tourists who wish to take in the sights constantly bombard them. The women dressed in black clothing deliver their vegetables to the island’s taverns on donkeys while the fishermen take in the sun, drink coffee and play games like dice and dominoes.
There are many things that the tourist industry has intruded on; however, the whitewashed buildings that encumber the country’s hillside and are around slender pebbled alleys have been preserved. Visitors can take a ferry or hydrofoil to get to any of these Aegean Sea islands from Piraeus, a historic harbor in Athens. This allows them to island hop if they so choose. Many larger islands have airports on them, which allow for connections to Athens or any key European city.
Athens is located in the south of Greece. However, it’s quite crowded and polluted but that doesn’t stop countless visitors from taking in the sights. There is a major landmark in the city that dominates it. It’s called the Parthenon. Thessaloniki, located in the north, is a modern city that has some Byzantine culture to it.
