A Short Guide To Aruba
The sunny, small island of Aruba is a popular stopover for cruises. Aruba is part of the Dutch Antilles; nearby Curacao and Bonaire are also part of the Antilles. These three small islands are cleverly designated the ABCs by locals. This branch of the Antilles is located some 14 miles off Venezuela’s coast.
Aruba’s sandy white beaches and sparkling blue water draw more than a million visitors annually. Oranjestad, the island’s capital and the Eagle and Palm beaches are the most developed parts of Aruba and feature round-the-clock casinos, great restaurants, luxurious hotels, and wonderful facilities for water sports.
A spot known as Fisherman’s Hut offers excellent conditions for windsurfing. To the south Fisherman’s Hut, there is a stretch of reef protected from the winds which offers great snorkeling and diving. Many hotels can schedule a deep-sea fishing trip for their clients.
Some people enjoy exploring Aruba’s less developed interior. Some of the interior is desert-like with divi-divi trees, cactus, and goats; the trade winds blow strongly across this arid land, causing the trees to grow in bent, distorted shapes.
English-speaking visitors will be glad to know that English is widely-spoken, although Aruba’s official language is Dutch. Spanish is also wide-spoken and some people understand French. Native islanders generally also know Papiamento, the native language.
